Buy Wine from Louis Terral
Located in the heart of Bugey, the Louis Terral winery is a testament to the passion and commitment to quality viticulture. Mérignat, a charming village in this region, is home to this winery that has become a benchmark for natural and biodynamic wines. Louis Terral, the founder, started his journey in the world of wine in 2013, leaving behind a career in the industry to pursue his true passion: viticulture.
His previous experience in different wineries in the Beaujolais and Mâconnais, working with the likes of Michel Guignier, Julien Balagny, Philippe Valette and the Tripoz, gave him a solid grounding in low-intervention winemaking techniques and a deep respect for the land.In 2016, Louis decided to establish his own winery on his wife's grandparents' farm in Mérignat. This step not only marked the beginning of his adventure as an independent winegrower, but also a return to his roots and a commitment to the land that welcomed him. Since then, Louis has worked tirelessly to develop wines that reflect the identity and purity of his terroir.
Vineyards
Louis Terral's vineyards, which extend over approximately 3 hectares, are situated on south and south-east facing slopes, giving them optimal exposure to the sun. This privileged location, together with the altitude of between 500 and 600 metres, creates an ideal microclimate for growing vines. The soil, a mixture of clay, granite and limestone, brings a distinctive complexity and minerality to the wines.
Louis practices biodynamic and sustainable viticulture, in the process of Demeter certification. This approach respects natural cycles and promotes a balanced and healthy ecosystem. Pruning is done once a year in spring, and the soil is tilled only once to promote the biological activity and health of the vineyard.
Philosophy
Louis Terral 's winemaking philosophy focuses on harmony with nature and minimal intervention. Inspired by the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and Masanobu Fukuoka, Louis seeks a model of natural agriculture that is sustainable and environmentally friendly. This philosophy is reflected in every aspect of his work, from vineyard care to vinification.
In the winery, Louis uses traditional, artisanal methods. The wines are pressed by hand and vinified with great care, ensuring that each bottle expresses the pure essence of the terroir. Vineyard treatments are complemented with herbal infusions and other natural preparations, avoiding the use of synthetic chemicals. This holistic approach to viticulture and winemaking results in wines that are not only delicious, but also authentic expressions of their place of origin.
The winery focuses primarily on two varieties: Gamay and Chardonnay. Gamay, which makes up the majority of its production, is grown in plots carefully selected for its unique characteristics. These wines are characterised by their freshness, fruit expression and elegance. On the other hand, the Chardonnay, although in smaller proportion, shows the versatility and richness of the Bugey terroir.
Each Louis Terral wine is a reflection of his philosophy: wines with no added sulphites, natural fermentations and a clear expression of the terroir. These wines are appreciated for their authenticity and their ability to tell the story of their origin.
In addition to his focus on wine quality, Louis Terral is deeply committed to sustainability and the environmental impact of his winery. His goal is to achieve a completely self-sufficient and environmentally friendly production. This commitment extends to all aspects of their operation, from vineyard management to winery practices.
