Description

In Turckheim, at the foot of the mythical Brand Grand Cru, lies the Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal, a plot of just 1.3 hectares, rescued from abandonment by Léonard Humbrecht in 1983. Where others saw an impossible hillside, with its 50% slope and terraces forgotten since World War II, Léonard saw potential. He reunited the small patches of vines, and instead of planting Riesling - the obvious choice - he opted for Pinot Gris, convinced that the deep soils of grey loams, clay and gypsum would preserve freshness and confer a unique structure. The name "Jebsal" alludes to the presence of gypsum, a key element in the mineral expression of this vineyard.

Winemaking

Since 2020, Clos Jebsal has been vinified as a dry Pinot Gris. It is harvested at the right point of ripeness, avoiding the noble rot that used to define its late harvests. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing for 12 months in large foudres. Malolactic fermentation takes place completely, softening the acidity without losing definition.

Taste

On the nose, Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Jebsal unfolds slowly: notes of ripe pear, dried apricot, beeswax and a background of wet stone. Nothing exuberant, all in mineral whispers. The palate is broad and textured, with precise acidity shaping its richness. There are layers of quince, white tea and a subtle citrus bitterness, like grapefruit zest. The finish is long, dry, with a salinity reminiscent of the soil in which it was born. An uncompromising Pinot Gris that honours its origins with a deep, serene voice.
