Buy Wine from Quinta Do Noval
Quinta do Noval is a historic name with an iconic status in the world of wine. Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, this winery has been producing great wines since the early 18th century. The name Quinta do Noval first appeared in land records in 1715.
History
The history of Quinta do Noval is marked by the actions of visionaries. António José da Silva, a merchant from Porto, acquired Quinta do Noval in 1894, after its devastation by phylloxera. He restored the property by replanting the vines. Luiz Vasconcelos Porto, his son-in-law, was the author of a vast programme of innovations, transforming many of the old narrow terraces into wider terraces, allowing for a more efficient use of the land and better exposure to the sun.
Quinta do Noval made a name for itself with the declaration of the Quinta do Noval Vintage Port of 1931 and the Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port of 1931. Since 1993, Quinta do Noval has been part of the international wine group of AXA Millésimes. In 1997, a new bottling line and warehouse was completed in Alijo, near Pinhão, making Quinta do Noval the first of the traditional Port wineries to centralise all its activities in the Douro Valley.
Vineyards
The winery benefits from a privileged position in the heart of the Douro Valley. The vineyard, which covers 192 hectares and is classified entirely with the letter A, is planted with the most noble grape varieties of the Douro: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousón.
The vineyard plots have a rich geographical diversity: altitude from 100 to 500 metres above sea level and schist soils mixed to varying degrees with a little clay. These characteristics give particular nuances to the wines depending on the plot from which they come. The blend of these nuances results in the magic of Quinta do Noval wines.
Philosophy
Today, the plots are replanted into single grape variety plots to suit each individual plot of land. The magnificent old terraces made of schist stone still represent the Quinta do Noval vineyard. Quinta do Noval is the only historic winery in Porto to use its vineyard name and produce a Vintage Port from a single vineyard, when declared.
The Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port comes from a small plot in the heart of the Noval vineyard, planted with ungrafted vines of indigenous grape varieties. According to Christian Seely, "A wine is great because of the quality of the grapes, the character of the year and where they come from. These things are much more important than anything we can do in the vineyard or in the winery".
Quinta do Noval's philosophy is based on the belief that terroir forges the greatness of a wine. That is why, since 1994, they decided to declare their Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port only when the greatness of the wine is indisputable.
