Buy Wine from Mas Coutelou
Winery located in France, specifically in the French region of Hérault, Languedoc, Roussillon, in the village of Puimisson, located a short distance southeast of Montpellier. It is owned by Jean Françoise Coutelou, better known as Jeff Coutelou.
The three-hundred-year-old winery
Jeff Coutelou now manages the estate he inherited from his father, and a winery that is more than 300 years old. He previously had 20 hectares under cultivation, which he reduced to 13 hectares, where hehas endeavoured to recover old vines over a hundred years old.
Jean Françoise Coutelou, one of the fathers of natural wine
When it comes to natural wines, Jean Françoise Coutelou is considered one of the main pioneers of the natural wine movement in Swiss francpe.
In fact, since 1987, his wines have been certified organic. In that year, only 200 hectares of the area were being farmed naturally, and one of those few hectares belonged to Jeff Coutelou.
There are now more than 20,000 organic hectares in the region, where organic agriculture is practised, and which have followed the example of this proponent of natural wines.
After a lot of hard work and effort, Jeff took back the family farm and is reviving its heritage and traditions.
Respect for the land in the vineyards, minimal intervention in the winery.
Jean Françoise Coutelou cultivates the vineyards naturally, respecting the land and the cycles. Jeff is not interested in fashions, on the contrary, he prefers traditional agriculture, or real peasant farming. In fact, his wine, Class Cuvée, was one of the first natural wines produced in 2013.
He has done a great job of reshaping the landscape right in an area of monoculture vineyards, where he created hedgerows of trees. He also planted strips of flowers in order to develop a microbial life that contributes to the better development of the vines, thanks to the insect-rich flora and fauna it harbours.
In general, Jeff's agricultural work in his vineyards focuses on traditional methods that avoid the use of chemicals, which require a great deal of effort, but which give him great satisfaction in obtaining natural wines that best express the terroir.
Natural winemaking
On the other hand, at the Mas Coutelou winery, all vinifications are carried out in a very meticulous and careful way, and Jean Françoise tries to use the minimum amount of sulphites possible. Fermentations are carried out using indigenous yeasts and the wines are bottled without filtering or fining.
Their wines, as mentioned above, are certified organic and vegan. They are usually very honest, natural wines.
Although he was one of the first winemakers in the area to start implementing organic practices, he has remained at the forefront as one of the leading exponents of natural wine in France and worldwide.
Rare grape nursery
Today, Jeff has reduced the estate from 20 hectares to 13 hectares and has been replacing certain vineyards to increase biodiversity.
Basically all the grape varieties he grows are indigenous to the South of France, as Jeff has taken great care to recover the typical grapes of the area, even the rarest ones, such as the Picardin, Castets and Servant varieties. In short, Jeff has practically turned several hectares of his estate into a nursery of rare grapes from France.
In addition to these grapes, he has plantations of more common local grapes such as Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Macabeu, Sauvignon Blanc and Clairette Musqué, among others.
