Buy Wine from Ossian
Ossian represents the paradigm of quality Verdejo wines in Spain. This young project was born from three greats: Javier Zaccagnini, owner of the Aalto winery in Ribera del Duero, Ismael Gozalo, winemaker, researcher, discreet... "the man who whispered to the Verdejo" and finally the French winemaker Pierre Millemann, advisor to several wineries in Burgundy and Germany. In June 2013 the owners of the Ribera del Duero winery, Pago de Carraovejas became the owner of the winery since it bought 50% of shares from Javier Zaccagnini and a significant amount of shares from Ismael Gozalo.
Ossian began its project with 17 hectares of vineyards in Nieva, in the province of Segovia, under the D.O. Rueda. Nieva is undoubtedly the heart, the quintessence of the most authentic Verdejo, where we can find the oldest vines, some of them pre-phylloxera, on sandy soils and aged between 100 and 200 years. These vines offer us small berries, with very good concentration and a reflection of the terroir where they come from; currently the total vineyard surface reaches 30 hectares located at a very considerable altitude: between 850 and 930 meters above sea level, a feature that gives them a great thermal contrast between day and night and therefore a later harvest than the rest of the wineries.
Ossian' s two wineries are located in Nieva: the older one in the Monasterio del Parral and the newly built one called El Cordel. Ismael Gozalo uses only indigenous yeasts in the winemaking process and therefore fermentation starts spontaneously.
Ossian produces three wines, always single varietal Verdejo: the always young and frank Quintaluna, without barrel aging and which expresses what defines the varietal: citrus and herbaceous in a unison symphony; Ossian of which 40,000 bottles will be produced, part of the grapes of the Quintaluna grapes and part of the Verdejo grapes.Ossian, of which 40,000 bottles will be produced, starts with grapes from pre-phylloxera vines and ferments in new and used barrels showing a very varietal nose with citrus, herbaceous, minerality and soft toasted notes, the palate has a creamy and glyceric entry but the finish is dry and somewhat bitter; finally Capitel is the last wine of which about 1,200 bottles are produced only in the years when the winery so decides; a wine that follows the profile of Ossian but gains in complexity and elegance.
