The Giovanni Rosso winery is located in the heart of Serralunga d'Alba, one of the most prestigious areas in Piedmont for the production of Barolo, the wine known as the "king of wines". Founded in 1906, Giovanni Rosso is a family winery whose history has been forged over more than a century in the hills of the Langhe.
Davide's vision has been crucial to the modernisation of the winery. Under his leadership, a new winery inspired by Bordeaux châteaux was designed, a place that reflects the balance between innovation and tradition. Furthermore, in 2016, the Rosso family decided to expand its winemaking project to Sicily, acquiring a property on the slopes of Etna, a place with a unique terroir that perfectly complements the winery's high-end wine offer.
Vineyards
Giovanni Rosso 's vineyards are located in some of the best areas of the Barolo D.O.C.G. appellation. In total, the winery owns about 3.5 hectares of vineyards, distributed in several Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (MGAs), each with its own particular characteristics.
The terroir of Serralunga d'Alba is one of the most special in the region. The vineyards are located on a predominantly clayey and calcareous soil, with a large presence of fossilised marl from Sant'Agata. This soil composition is ideal for Nebbiolo, as it allows the roots to penetrate deeply, absorbing minerals and giving the wines a unique complexity.
Among the most outstanding vineyards is Vignarionda, a mythical vineyard in the Barolo area, known for producing some of the best wines of the appellation. Here, some of the vines are over 80 years old, giving the grapes exceptional concentration and quality. Davide Rosso, in his eagerness to maintain the essence of this vineyard, carefully replanted the vines in 2011, cloning the massal selection of the original plants to preserve their character.
The Cerretta vineyard is another of the winery's great assets. Located at an altitude of 360 metres, this vineyard benefits from excellent sun exposure, which allows the grapes to ripen optimally. Cerretta's calcareous and clayey soils, together with the careful cultivation methods, give rise to wines with great structure, enveloping tannins and excellent ageing capacity. In addition, Giovanni Rosso also cultivates other MGAs such as La Serra, Meriame, Sorano, Costabella and Damiano, each bringing specific characteristics that enrich the winery's portfolio.
In Sicily, the winery owns 14 hectares of vineyards on the slopes of the Etna volcano, at an altitude of 750 metres. The region's volcanic soil, rich in minerals, is perfect for growing the indigenous Carricante and Nerello Mascalese varieties. The winery uses traditional viticulture techniques, such as the alberello pruning system, to adapt to the Sicilian terroir and maintain the integrity of the grapes.
Philosophy
Giovanni Rosso' s philosophy can be summed up in one key idea:"The wine must be a perfect copy of its terroir". This belief underlies all the winery's decisions, from vineyard management to the vinification process.
The winery is characterised by low-yield viticulture, believing that limiting production per hectare allows quality to be concentrated in each cluster. The agricultural practices are respectful of the environment and each vineyard is worked in a personalised manner. Pruning, thinning and defoliation techniques are adapted according to the specific needs of each vineyard, which ensures optimum development of the plants and, therefore, of the grapes. The predominant pruning system is Guyot, and biodiversity is encouraged in the vineyards, which contributes to the quality of the soil and the health of the vines.
In terms of winemaking, Giovanni Rosso uses techniques that combine tradition and modernity. In the production of its Barolos, the winery carries out long macerations, often lasting more than 30 days, to extract the full aromatic and tannic potential of the Nebbiolo. This prolonged maceration process allows the wines to develop great structure, with firm but well-integrated tannins, which give them excellent ageing potential.
Once the wines have completed fermentation, they are aged in large Slovenian oak casks, where they spend several years. The use of large barrels instead of small casks allows the wines to mellow gradually, without acquiring too many woody notes, thus preserving the purity of the terroir.
The expansion to Sicily has brought a new challenge for the winery, but the approach remains the same: to respect the terroir and make wines that are an authentic expression of the place they come from. In Sicily, Etna wines are made from the local Carricante and Nerello Mascalese varieties, grapes that are perfectly adapted to the volcanic soil and unique climate of the region.
