Colet Vins represents the revolution in the world of Catalan sparkling wines and Sergi Coleta nonconformist against the established and those who establish it.
Although the small family property starts in 1783 under the figure of masover (landlord) is really in 1992 when they begin their journey as producers of Cava and still white wines with their estates located in the municipalities of Pacs del Penedés, where the winery is located and the municipality of Sant Martí Sarroca, both about 40 km south of Barcelona. The estates are oriented to the northeast and benefit from a significant temperature difference between day and night, an especially important factor in the production of sparkling wines where maximum freshness is sought in the base wines.
Colet Vins, led by Sergi Colet, who studied oenology and internships in emblematic wineries such as Champagne Pol Roger, decided to break with the existing immobility in the sector by drastically reducing yields in the vineyard, seeking a line of sparkling wine production where the fruit is the protagonist versus the dominant line: The use of autolysis aromas and, above all, innovation in the use of varietals other than the traditional ones: grapes such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer or Pinot Noir. Not without problems and obstacles from the D.O.Cava, in 1996 he decided to embark on a solo adventure producing sparkling wines according to the traditional method but under the D.O.Penedés. He was the first to decide to leave the D.O.Cava dominated by the two largest producers of the appellation but he would not be the last...a path that has been followed by a number of producers such as Albet i Noya, Raventós i Blanc, Loxarel among others, differentiating their sparkling wines in price, quality and prestige, especially in the international market.
Colet Vins practices organic agriculture and is in the process of certification, something that Sergi says is undoubtedly positive, not only because of the increasing demand from consumers, but also as a factor that preserves life in the land he cultivates. Regarding the elaboration, his line is mainly Extra Brut with low dosages and very integrated and creamy carbonic.
Sergi Colet elaborates a groundbreaking, dynamic and original line of sparkling wines where we find as flagship the Tradicional: coupage of the three best known grapes in the area, Xarel.lo, Macabeo and Parellada, a sparkling wine of which he elaborates about 50,000 bottles annually.A Priori is a sparkling wine with a good base of Macabeo and Chardonnay where the varietals Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Muscat provide an exotic and markedly aromatic character that makes it an ideal choice for aperitifs; A Posteriori is the single-varietal Merlot rosé sparkling wine, with a low layer and particularly interesting to accompany pasta dishes; Vatúa! "expresses very well the contrast that we will find in nose and mouth, made mainly with Muscat and complemented with Parellada and Gewürztraminer, it plays the duality of aromatic in nose and yet very dry and fresh in mouth, one of the best options for a romantic evening with some good makis or tuna sashimi ; However, if what we are looking for is a sparkling wine with long aging and good structure, we will find it in the Colet Grand Cuvée, where the fresh Chardonnay from the Finca del Más Romaní will delight a good roast chicken; we cannot finish without mentioning the groundbreaking and elegant Assemblage, a coupage of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in equal parts, which already in view with its bird's eye color already conveys charmand class, this is another of the sparkling wines with which Colet has been known, for combining innovation, elegance, long aging and freshness.
Colet Vins ' annual production is around 110,000 bottles and exports almost two thirds of its production. The winery is also working on a joint project with Navazos in which they produce two sparkling wines where the expedition liquor comes from wines from the Jerez region, we are referring to Colet Navazos Extra Brut and Colet Navazos Reserva Extra Brut.
