Buy Wine from Orto Vins
Orto Vins is the dream come true of Joan Asens, Josep Maria Jové and the brothers Jordi and Josep Maria Beltrán, known as the "Orto Boys"; the dream of being able to make wines in the land where they were born, of being able to make wines from the vines of those who made it possible for them to be born and become interested in the world of wine and of being able to make wines to leave a legacy to their descendants in terms of both viticultural and winemaking heritage. And that dream, like all dreams, is not by chance but the result of the tenacity and perseverance of the "little elf" of Montsant: Joan Asens; restless, mystic, cross-thinker, pragmatic, accomplice of nature and its cycles, student of the interactions between earth, air, people and stars... he exudes depth and transmits curiosity... like his wines.
Orto Vins takes its name from the Greek word meaning straight, perfect, correct and symbolizes the moment when the sun crosses the horizon. The project took shape in 2008 when the Orto Boys decided to return to winemaking in the traditional way they learned from their parents and grandparents, with their own vineyards and varietals that had been despised and almost disappeared. Joan Asens is the alma mater and perhaps the best known of the four since he worked for 16 years as winemaker for Alvaro Palacios in Priorat, actively participating in the prestigious L'Ermita, Dofí and Terrasses.
Orto Vins starts with 12 estates in the Catalan region of Priorat, in the small village of Masroig, and they belong to the D.O. Montsant; undulating vineyards and many small valleys of predominantly calcareous composition. The viticulture is organic and they follow the lunar calendar as it was done ancestrally; they do not declare themselves followers of biodynamics which they consider more suitable for Central Swiss francpean areas than for Mediterranean areas. The varietals found in their estates are Garnatxa, Samsó, Garnatxa Peluda, Picapoll Negre, Ull de Llebre, Garnatxa Blanca and Cabernet Sauvignon.
They move around 35.The base wine is Orto Negre, a "basic" wine that represents the Mediterranean character of the area but without renouncing the necessary freshness to make it a wine of pleasure; its medium range is represented by Les Comes d'Orto, also a coupage like the previous one but with more identity and length; in the section of the estate wines represented by the predominant single varietal, we are particularly seduced by the Palell or "gin and tonic" wine as Joan likes to refer to it because of its markedly herbal character of the Mediterranean forest; but without a doubt Les Tallades de Cal Nicolau is the most personal and exceptional of the four estates, due to the rarity of the varietal: The Picapoll Negre, a wine with a magical texture that escapes the senses, could not be other than the estate of Joan's grandfather, Mr. Nicolau. Nicolau. Nor should we forget the traditional naturally sweet wines of the area, of which we would like to highlight the Dolç d'Orto Blanc, an essence of white Grenache with a small part of Macabeo and Picapoll Blanc, ideal as a liquid dessert and on a par with the best Swiss francpean sweets due to its extraordinary balance.
