Description

Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Hengst Grand Cru was born of a counter-intuitive decision: to plant Riesling where for centuries Gewurztraminer reigned supreme. In the heart of Wintzenheim, on the warm, stony slopes of the Rotenberg, the Zind-Humbrecht family set out to reimagine the potential of the Hengst Grand Cru. This terroir of calcareous red marl and rich in iron and trace elements offers dense, well-drained, mineral-rich soils. Although it enjoys a mild, dry climate, the grapes ripen slowly, building up tension, structure and a unique resistance to noble rot.

The vineyards, facing southeast, receive enough sun to achieve full phenolic ripeness without losing acidity. The result is a wine that combines power, nerve and longevity, revealing the deeper, more structured side of Alsatian Riesling.

Winemaking

The grapes used to make Zind Humbrecht Riesling Hengst Grand Cru are harvested by hand and gently pressed. Spontaneous fermentation takes place without the addition of yeast, in large old oak vats, where the wine remains for 12 months. Malolactic fermentation takes place, softening the acidity and adding texture without diluting the wine's energy. Zind-Humbrecht seeks a balance between varietal precision and frank expression of terroir, in a wine that captures the essence of Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Hengst Grand Cru.

Taste

Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Hengst Grand Cru presents itself with a restrained, restrained nose, where limestone dominates: tense citrus, dried flowers, beeswax and a delicate echo of alpine herbs. The palate is precise, with cutting acidity and a surprisingly tannic structure for a white wine. The finish is long, saline, with an elegant bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit or white tea. There is density, but also verticality. A dry, powerful Riesling that demands time, attention and a palate willing to discover the layers of Hengst.
