Description

On the steep slopes of the legendary Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, where compressed volcanic ash forms a dark and dramatic soil, this Pinot Gris is born that defies expectations. Although Léonard Humbrecht initially dreamed of planting only Riesling on this steep hill, it was the 1983 vintage that revealed the true potential of Pinot Gris in this terroir. Since then, the youngest vines - planted between 1978 and 1999 - have been destined for this cuvée: Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique, a vibrant introduction to Rangen's unique geology.

The high altitude and southern orientation provide a slow and balanced maturation. Unlike other areas of Alsace, Thann receives more rainfall, allowing the roots to explore deep into the rocky subsoil in search of water. This gives the wine a firm, mineral and precise structure, far from easy exuberance.

Winemaking

The grapes for Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique, harvested by hand, are fermented with indigenous yeasts. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages for 12 months in large oak vats, which preserves the purity of the fruit without masking the volcanic identity of the soil. The result is a surprisingly dry Pinot Gris with vibrant tension.

Taste

On the nose, Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique displays notes of smoky stone, citrus peel, dried apricot and a hint of beeswax. When oxygenated, subtle hints of black tea and wilted flower emerge. The palate is dry, straight, with a saline texture and vibrant acidity that stretches the wine elegantly. The finish is long, slightly bitter, with mineral and spicy echoes. It is a wine for those who seek the pure expression of the soil rather than the fruit: precise, sober and deeply linked to the land where it was born.
