Buy Wine from Monterrei
Monterrei is one of the five appellations of origin existing in Galicia, recognized as such in 1994 and covering 473 hectares of vineyards in the Monterrei Valley in the municipalities of Verin, Oímbra and Castrelo do Val, on the southeastern edge of the province of Orense, next to the Portuguese border. The Monterrei DO is divided into two subzones: Monterrei Valley and Monterrei Hillsides.
Of the five existing appellations, Monterrei is the warmest and hottest during the spring and summer months. It enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate with a continental tendency influenced by the Atlantic Ocean.
Monterrei enjoys a diversity of soils: slate and shale soils, very interesting for the production of red wines; granitic and sandy soils, which are great companions for the cultivation of white varieties and somewhat reminiscent of the soil style of the Alella appellation; and clay soils.
The appellation currently has 23 registered wineries and a total production of 900 hectoliters per year. It is clear that this is a tiny appellation compared to other Spanish appellations. There are no large extensions of vineyards here, as the vineyards are spread over small plots of land.
The varieties authorized in Monterrei are: Mencia, Merenzao, Tempranillo, Caiño Tinto, Sousón, Bastardo, Mouratón and Garnacha for red wines; and Doña Blanca, Godello, Treixadura, Albariño, Caiño Blanco, Loureira and Monstruosa as white varieties.
Undoubtedly Quinta da Muradella, under the direction of José Luís Mateo, is the most exquisite winery in Monterrei. Its wines are of extreme finesse and balance in an appellation affected by the torrid sun.
Monterrei, a great unknown awaits secret magic!
