Description
In the far south of Alsace, where the river Thur meanders between steep slopes, lies the legendary Grand Cru Rangen de Thann. There, Zind Humbrecht grows his Clos Saint Urbain, a 5.5 ha vineyard planted exclusively with Riesling on dark volcanic soils, rich in magnesium. This extreme plot - with slopes of up to 90% and a cold, late-ripening climate - demands patience and conviction. Olivier Humbrecht, a pioneer of biodynamics in the region, has been committed to uncompromising viticulture since the 1990s: minimal intervention, respect for the natural rhythm of the vines and vinification that prioritises the pure expression of the terroir.
Clos Saint Urbain benefits from a southern exposure that allows the grapes to reach full maturity in October, despite a notably late budding and flowering. Rainfall - more abundant than in the rest of Alsace - is a key ally for these well-drained soils.
Winemaking
The grapes destined for the Zind Humbrecht Riesling Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Grand Cru are pressed slowly, during cycles that can exceed 10 hours, without aggressive clarification, preserving indigenous yeasts and natural elements of the must. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously. The wine is aged for 18 months on fine lees in traditional French oak foudres, some of which are more than 40 years old. It is neither filtered nor cold stabilised, allowing the wine to speak of its unadorned origin.
Taste
Deeply mineral, Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Grand Cru offers a complex nose of ripe citrus, herbal infusion, cold smoke and flint. On the palate, it is sharp, vertical, with a sharp acidity that structures the wine like a backbone. The texture is compact, with a lingering salinity that envelops notes of bergamot, dried flower and hot stone. Long, vibrant and uncompromising, this wine is a true reflection of Rangen's volcanic and severe character: a Riesling for those seeking intensity, tension and authenticity.
