His career in wine began at a very young age, growing neighbouring vines to produce his first wines. After completing his oenology studies at the prestigious Roseworthy College in South Australia, he worked in various wineries in California and Swiss francpe. However, it was in Barossa, Australia, where he developed his unique style and launched his famous Shiraz under his own name. Since then, he has collaborated on projects in Spain and Italy, establishing himself as one of the most respected winemakers internationally.
Vineyards
The vineyards of Bodegas Alto Moncayo are located in the foothills of the Moncayo, a mountain that has a decisive influence on the microclimate of the area. Situated some 500 metres above sea level, the vineyards enjoy a cool, dry continental climate, ideal for growing Garnacha. This native variety, grown on old vines between 40 and 100 years old, is the true protagonist of the winery's wines.
The terroir where Garnacha is grown is varied and complex, composed mainly of stony soils with slight insertions of limestone, marl, quartzite and slate. These highly permeable soils allow water to seep into the deeper clay layers, where it is stored and provides hydration to the vines during periods of drought. These unique conditions contribute to the creation of wines with exceptional personality and structure.
In total, the winery has 92 hectares of vineyards distributed in different areas of Campo de Borja, such as Ainzón, Fuendejalón and Tabuenca. The wines they produce are made exclusively with Garnacha grapes, which underlines the winery's specialisation in this variety.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Bodegas Alto Moncayo focuses on making high quality wines that express the unique character of the Garnacha grape and the terroir of Campo de Borja. The winery follows a process of controlled growth, without losing its essence as a small winery. Over the years, they have managed to combine tradition and modernity, applying innovative winemaking techniques without sacrificing respect for traditional methods.
The winery's leitmotiv is to consolidate its position as a world leader in the production of Garnacha wines, an objective that is reflected in each of its products. The winery is committed to creating wines with a strong personality and distinctive character, reflecting both the potential of the variety and the environment in which it is grown.
In terms of winemaking techniques, the winery carefully selects the Garnacha grapes according to their ripeness, and the winemaking processes are adapted to the specific characteristics of each vintage. The wines are aged in French and American oak barrels for a period that varies according to the wine, which gives them a unique structure and complexity. The winemakers work with dedication and precision to ensure that each bottle of Alto Moncayo represents the excellence of Borja Garnacha.
The winery's most outstanding wines include Alto Moncayo, Veratón and Aquilon, all made exclusively from Garnacha and with a focus on quality and terroir expression. These wines have received high scores from the most prestigious critics and have been acclaimed both nationally and internationally.
