Buy Wine from Pedro Parra y Familia
The winery Pedro Parra y Familia is located in the Itata region, in the south of Chile, near the Bio Bio and Itata areas. This winery was conceived in Pedro Parra's mind many years ago, but only after 15 years as a consultant, he decided that it was the right time to start. The main idea was always clear: to make pure terroir wines from granitic soils.
In addition, Pedro wanted to create something he could share with his family, his wife Camila and his children Diego, Felipe and Colomba. The locations of his vineyards, such as Guarilihue, Cauquenes, Florida, Ranquil, Rere and San Rosendo, are not yet widely recognised in the world, but Pedro hopes that, with his project, he can help all those brave winegrowers who have protected their vineyards for more than 200 years.History
Pedro Parra was born in Concepción, Chile, and is currently raising his family there. He holds a PhD in terroir from the Centre d'Agriculture de Paris and has six years of experience in French terroirs. He has been described as the leading figure of the "New Chile" movement by the international press. As a consultant, he has worked with many wineries, including Comando G, Jean-Marc Roulot, Marco Marengo, Liger Belair, Altos las Hormigas, Chapter 24 and Zuccardi, to name a few. In addition, Pedro has been recognised for his innovative work in terroir and has been included in the prestigious "Decanter Magazine Top 50 Power List" in 2009, 2011 and 2013.
Vineyards
The Itata region is a mysterious place full of history, terroir and passion. For many years, it was an area of isolated granitic mountains, close to the ocean, 500 km south of Santiago. This isolated location is the key to its unique terroir. In geological terms, the area is defined by schist and granite soils from the Paleozoic era, 220-300 million years old. Pedro prefers to focus on the sandy quartz granitic soils, as they force the roots deeper than the clay soils, expressing the terroir better. The climate is coastal, cool and cloudy, with enough rainfall to allow viticulture without irrigation.
Philosophy
The philosophy of Pedro Parra y Familia is to make pure terroir wines from granitic soils. Pedro seeks to make wines that he enjoys drinking and to be free to select and create from various granitic terroirs. He farms 11 organic Cinsault and País vineyards in Itata. His wines are made with minimal intervention and vinified at low temperatures for minimal extraction. In each bottle, the most important thing is the connection between the soil, the wine and the people behind it with their fascinating stories.
