Description
When Olivier Humbrecht first bottled his Zind-Humbrecht Pinot Gris cuvée Clos Windsbuhl in 1988, he did so with the certainty that this historic terroir - documented since 1324 and once owned by the Habsburgs - deserved a noble and uncompromising interpretation. Located in Hunawihr, at an altitude of 350 metres, this south and east-facing clos sits on Middle Jurassic limestone soils (muschelkalk), a mixture of fossil limestone, active clays and outcropping bedrock.
Winemaking
Here, where ripening is slow and the grapes are harvested weeks later than in the rest of Alsace, the Pinot Gris reaches a unique, deep and austere expression. Zind Humbrecht works this vineyard according to biodynamic principles, selecting only the oldest vines (over 40 years old), with low yields, to preserve the minerality and complexity of the site. The vinification process respects the raw material: long pressing, spontaneous fermentation, natural malolactic fermentation and 18 months ageing on fine lees in neutral foudres over 40 years old.
Taste
Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Clos Windsbuhl does not seek to please, but to express. It opens with restrained notes of ripe pear, dried flower, beeswax and a delicate background of mineral smoke. When oxygenated, nuances of white tea, white truffle and marzipan emerge. The palate is impressive for its ample, almost unctuous texture, but sustained by a straight acidity and a firm salinity, a direct legacy of the chalky soil. The finish is long, taut, with hints of lime zest, dried spices and wet chalk.
Far from the sweet or complacent Pinot Gris of Alsace, this wine is a declaration of principles: vertical, deep, mineral, made to evolve and meditate. A wine that looks to the past without nostalgia and to the future with conviction.
