Location of the winery
This winery is located in the sub-region of Côte Vermeille de Roussillon on the Mediterranean border between France and Spain.
"Casot" is a local name for the stone shelters in the vineyards that dot the mountainside, which gave workers in the past the opportunity to rest and hide from the inclement weather.
History
Casot Des Mailloles is one of the smallest vineyards in Banyuls, and became famous thanks to Alain Castex and Ghislaine Magnier. In the 1990s, Alain Castex and Ghislaine Magnier created their natural wines.
Castex and his partner ran this small domaine on the steep slopes above the Mediterranean from 1994 to 2014.
After their retirement they entrusted their friend Jordi Pérezto take over Casot des Mailloles as sole owner since 2015.
Jordi Pérez, who studied viticulture and oenology at Blanquefort in 2010, has done a variety of jobs in famous wineries, large cooperatives and also small estates such as Perreou in Côtes de Gascogne.
Jordi Pérez is a young Catalan oenologist, and runs the project with the same philosophy of the former owners.
Vineyards
The grapes are grown in the Pyrenees, with small walled terraces facing the Mediterranean sea of the Côte Vermeille de Roussillon, where the work has to be done by hand all year round, as no machine can enter these vineyards.
The surface of the estate is about 4 hectares and the composition of the soils is slate, cultivated with strict organic and biodynamic farming techniques . These soils are certified organic and no additives are used in the winery.
Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts and the wines are never filtered or clarified, completely avoiding sulphites.
Wines
The grapes grown and used to make the surprising wines of the winery are Garnacha, Mourvèdre, Cariñena and Syrah.
Casot Des Mailloles only produces several thousand bottles each year, so its large selection of wines is always in great demand.
Its wines are magnificent and appetising, with fruity, floral aromas and a lot of delicacy, the main characteristics of this renowned winery being the know-how and quality of its wines.
And you, do you know some of the unbeatable wines of this winery? Leave us your comments.
