DO Jumilla is placed between Albacete (Castilla La Mancha) and Murcia, and represents almost 30.000 vineyard hectares. Here, landscape is made up by valleys and plains framed by the mountains as vines are grown between 300 and 900 metres above the sea level. Jumilla climate is extremely continental, with low rainfall, very dry summers and cold, intense winters. Soils are chalky, stony and loose.
Jumilla is well known by its red and rosé wines, being Monastrell the dominant variety in the winemaking scene. This appellation produces full-bodied, highly alcoholic wines. Garnacha Tintorera, Cencibel, Syrah and Petit Verdot are also successfully cultivated.
As far as white wines are concerned, considerably less abundant, the main varieties are Merseguera, Airén and Pedro Ximénez.
