Michel Guignier is the master of natural wines, or as he likes to call them: "pure vine" wines. Although he started out in conventional agriculture, he converted his estate to organic farming in 2000 and then experimented with biodynamic methods.
Michel Guignier's vineyard
His vineyards, located in Faudon (France), are surrounded by the forests of the commune of Vauxrenard. They are a true reflection of his passion for biodiversity and soil quality. It is located at the heights of Beaujolais, 500 metres above sea level, a characteristic that allows for slower growth. The soils on which he works are friable granite with degraded sandstone. He owns seven hectares of vineyards, ranging in age from 30 to more than 75 years old.In this region, more and more winegrowers have been evolving and moving away from conventional agriculture, thanks in large part to Michel and his reference point. But he doesn't do all the work alone. He relies on the help of Charolais cows and his horse, Bister, to graze. Together they are a real team effort, as they "cut the grass" by feeding on the weeds that grow under the vines, and this serves as a natural fertiliser. Michel is responsible for producing a perfect biodynamic fruit, which is then left to ferment for a long time with little intervention.
Michel Guignier's wines
All his bottlings are made without any additives: no industrial yeast, no added enzymes, no sulphites, no filtration and no fining. Michel is a 100% gamay man, who wants the wine to be fluid, balanced and refreshing. Examples are his captivating Guignier Beaujolais La Bonne Pioche 2017, as well as Guignier Moncailleux 2016, a deep and complex gamay. We can also savour Guignier Le Boutis 2017, fragrant and light, and its Guignier Granite 2016, fruity and juicy. All the grapes are fermented using a semi-carbonic method in epoxy-coated concrete tanks. Maceration is carried out with the whole grapes harvested without destemming, and the wine is aged in oak vats.- ;
