Buy Wine from Los Comuns
The Catalan winery, Los Comuns, is the natural wine project of Jordi Escoda and Agustí Perelló. These childhood friends produce their bottles under the Priorat appellation. The story that unites them is quite curious: in the 1800s, when they were children in El Molar, Catalonia (Spain), there was a cholera epidemic that greatly affected the village. The children had to wear aprons to identify it. Jordi and Agustí were bullied by other children from Priorat who nicknamed them "los comuns" (the commons). Hence their name.
The Comuns' vineyard
When they started in the business, they made their first harvest in 2010 with only 200 bottles. Today, they cultivate a total surface of 3.5 hectares in different plots. Some of them are owned, others are rented, and all the vineyards are located on the border of the Priorat and Montsant DOs. Most of the varieties used are Carignan (80%), Grenache (15%) and some Cabernet Sauvignon (5%). In addition, they have approximately half a hectare of white grapes. The area where the grapes are planted is rockier and more difficult to cultivate. Many years ago, villagers who did not want to work for the landowners were forced to leave. As there was no property, bartering was used as the main economy. It can be said that this project stems from that contagious spirit of comradeship.
Wines of Los Comuns
The winery produces around 3,500 bottles of natural wines a year. These wines are both powerful and structured, as well as fruity and juicy. They undergo spontaneous alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts and are aged in stainless steel, amphorae or old oak. They are ideal for a meal with friends.
