Buy Wine from Domaine Matrot
Domaine Matrot is a family domain founded in 1914 by Joseph Matrot in Meursault commune, in the famous Côte de Beaune (Burgundy). Six generations have already passed through Domaine Matrot and nowadays Thierry Matrot and his wife Pascale are managing the property.
Domaine Matrot has 18 hectares distributed across the municipalities Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, Volnay, Blagny, Auxey-Duresses and Monthélie, but it owes its reputation to the radical wines produced at Meursault that cannot left indifferent any wine connaisseur. The varieties plated are Chardonnay, Aligoté and Pinot Noir. Since 1976, when Thierry Matrot joined the winery, they started quitting the use of chemical fertilizers and other products and replaced them for compost based manures. At the same time, with his father Pierre, they start working on the vines according to the lutte raisonné (reasoned struggle) method, so they apply phytosanitary products only as a last resort and in highly controlled doses. From year 2000 on, when vines were all disinfected, they practice ecological agriculture: sub soiling work to aerate the soil and get rid of weeds, the only manure applied is produced by their own compost plant, summer pruning to eliminate suckers and green pruning carried out to control the output, etc… Pierre's philosophy is that his wines should express the vintage and the terroir!
At the cellar, Domaine Matrot wines are produced under perfect hygienic conditions. During the fermentation period temperature is controlled so it is carried out slowly (between 8 and 10 weeks). Work on lees is essential during the ageing period and bâtonnage is done depending on the harvest. Wines age in French oak barrels for 11 months with a 20% new oak.
Domaine Matrot wine collection encompasses 12 white wines and 6 red wines. Which have most impressed us? Domaine Matrot Bourgogne Blanc produced with Chardonnay grapes from Meursault, with a complete malolactic fermentation carried out in oak barrels. It is a fresh, floral and citric wine, ideal to drink with sushi and salads. Domaine Matrot Meursault is produced with grapes from 11 different Meursault plots and fermented with natural yeasts. The outstanding notes are honey and cream. The grapes to elaborate Domaine Matrot Meursault 1er Cru Blagny come from Blagny vineyards, where the land is rugged and clay-limestone soils are also rich in flint, supplying wine with mineral nuances. Domaine Matrot Meursault 1er Cru Charmes is a great wine, unctuous, round, powerful and elegant, aged in bottle. Indeed a great match for oily fish, poultry, white meat and meat-rice dishes. Domaine Matrot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Chalumeaux is refined, delicate, floral and mineral. It is suggested to be kept at least for five years in bottle before its intake to get its full expression. Domaine Matrot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Quintessence is the result of two 1er Cru de Puligny parcels blending. It is a rich, strong wine with honey, fresh almonds and flower hints. Domaine Matrot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes comes from a Meursault Charmes neighbouring plot where wines are vigorous however expressed with elegance and finesse. It is recommended to accompany oily white fish such as turbot. Domaine Matrot Auxey-Duresses produced with Pinot Noir grapes, 30% of which are not crushed, so part of the wine has carbonic maceration. The resulting wine is fruity, elegant and slightly rustic. Domaine Matrot Monthélie is a plot placed between Volnay and Meursault municipalities, where the land is sloppy with shallow soils. Wine is really dense and concentrated, with a red fruits explosion taste. Domaine Matrot Volnay 1er Cru Santenots is a parcel from Meursault that produces strong, rich yet delicate wines. A minimum ten years period of lying down in bottle is recommended to fully appreciate the wine. Domaine Matrot Blagny 1er Cru La Pièce sous le Bois has its origin in a Blagny lot, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines coexist, quite an oddity in Burgundy. This wine is poetry made of currants, blackberries and undergrowth. Highly recommended to pair with game food.
