Buy Wine from Barco del Corneta
Bodega Barco del Corneta is the result of the personal and professional experience of Beatriz Herranz, agronomist and later oenologist.
The name of her winery Barco del Corneta is the name of a pine forest located in the family vineyards in Cantarrana, the same one of her childhood memories where Beatriz played as a child.
History
The history of Bodega Barco del Corneta begins in the vineyards that Beatriz's grandfather had in the Valladolid municipality of La Seca. In that plot of land inherited from her grandfather in the Cantarranas estate, the seed of Barco del Corneta wines began.
There, in 2008, Beatriz and her mother planted the Verdejo grape variety on sedimentary soils of sand, clay and pebbles, with a layer of limestone in the subsoil.
The Cantarranas site is located at an altitude of more than 700 metres above sea level and is home to five and a half hectares of family vineyards.
In that year, he began his project in the family vineyards to recover the essence of the forgotten Verdejo grape variety.
His is a small and very personal project in which he makes Verdejo wines that are far removed from what is marketed globally.
In 2013, having consolidated his project, he decided to make a Verdejo with a larger production and this is his regional wine Barco del Corneta Cucú, which is made from vines located in La Seca and Aldeanueva del Codonal (Segovia).
This is a young wine, but with all the essence of its philosophy. Likewise, in 2014, he decided to make his first red wine from a very small minority of grapes from 80-year-old Juan García vines in Arribes del Duero.
In 2017, his friend from university, Félix Crespo, an agronomist and oenologist with previous experience and a first class partner, joined the project.
That same year, they decided to move the winery to an old house in La Seca with a courtyard, underground cellar and wine press. After building the new winery, he began to make visits to private individuals.
The vineyards
The vineyards are located in the natural setting of Cantarranas, La Seca. They have been cultivated on sandy soils, with a lot of pebbles, clay and limestone in deeper strata. The climate is continental, with cold and very dry winters.
Beatriz Herranz, cultivates all her vines following organic farming standards, respecting the variety, the soils and the climate.
The grapes are harvested by hand and transported to the winery in 15 kg crates. They are then fermented in 300 and 500 litre oak barrels with local yeasts.
What this winemaker has done is to turn a small project into a personal life objective, which has its origin in the fruits of the Verdejo grape.
The climatic characteristics and the clear idea of creating wines that respect the soil, the grapes and the environment allow the vineyard to be worked according to organic farming guidelines. No non-natural treatments are used and all the work is done by hand.
Barco del Corneta has created a personality of Verdejo in La Seca; its main mission is to make a more accessible Verdejo, with the complexity and purity provided by the centenary vines and to rescue some varieties that have been forgotten over time.
