Description

In the extreme south of Alsace, where the vineyard almost touches the clouds and the river Thur brings its warm, moist breath, one of Zind Humbrecht' s most unique wines is born. On the steep slopes of the Grand Cru Rangen de Thann, on volcanic soils, lie two small plots of Gewürztraminer, cultivated according to biodynamic principles and with a deep reverence for the terroir. The Clos Saint Urbain, named after the patron saint of winegrowers, is a cult vineyard. Here, Gewürztraminer is not a wine of indulgence: it is a mineral statement, a work of time and fire.

Winemaking

The biodynamic vinification of Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Grand Cru follows a hands-off but meticulously precise approach. The grapes, hand-picked at optimum ripeness, go through long, gentle pressing cycles. The must is not excessively clarified to preserve indigenous yeasts and natural protein components. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously, and the wine ages for 18 months on the lees in neutral 40-year-old French oak barrels. Each step seeks not to interfere, but to reveal the deep imprint of the Rangen.

Taste

From the first nose, Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Saint Urbain Rangen de Thann Grand Cru impresses: smoky, flinty notes, followed by aromas of exotic candied fruit, dried orange peel, beeswax and warm spices. The palate is dense, almost unctuous, but the acidity and minerality hold it firmly. This is not a Gewürztraminer of flowers or easy sweetness, but of structure, tension and depth. The finish is very long, with hints of black tea, incense and hot rock. A wine that defies convention and embodies the brute force of an extreme volcanic terroir. Designed for cellaring and for drinkers looking for emotion rather than caress.
