Description
Few plots in Alsace arouse as much reverence as Clos Saint Urbain, in the heart of the Grand Cru Rangen de Thann. In the 1970s, the Zind Humbrecht family decided to restore this extreme vineyard, with its vertiginous 90% slopes and unique volcanic soils. A bold, almost reckless decision, motivated by their conviction that the wine should speak the mineral language of the soil. The southern exposure favours slow ripening in October and November, allowing the Pinot Gris grapes to reach a complexity and structure rarely seen before.
Winemaking
The vinification of Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru is governed by a philosophy of minimum intervention and maximum fidelity to the terroir. The grapes, harvested by hand, are pressed during long cycles that extract all the richness of the fruit. Clarification is barely perceptible: indigenous yeasts and natural proteins are preserved to maintain the lively energy of the must. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously. Subsequently, the wine ages for 18 months on fine lees in French oak foudres over 40 years old, which provide roundness without robbing the mineral character of the wine.
Taste
An intense and unmistakable perfume rises from the glass: flint, cold smoke, volcanic ash, followed by ripe notes of pear, dried apricots and candied quince. Nothing is superficial; everything is reminiscent of the black subsoil and the extreme climate of the Rangen. On the palate, Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos Saint Urbain Grand Cru is dense, structured, deep, but at the same time tense and dynamic. The acidity is firm and prolongs flavours of white fruit, candied citrus and fine spices, all enveloped in an almost tactile salinity. The finish is long, dry, with a mineral persistence that defies Pinot Gris expectations. It is a wine that does not seek to please immediately, but to awaken: a pure and radical expression of the vineyard, for those who seek emotion, character and authenticity in every sip.
