Description
On the high, stony slopes of Clos Windsbuhl in southern Alsace, Gewürztraminer acquires an unusually restrained, refined expression. This plot, surrounded by walls and set on limestone soils, enjoys a cooler microclimate than the rest of the region. Here, Olivier Humbrecht, pioneer of biodynamism in France and the country's first Master of Wine, found the perfect balance between maturity and tension. His philosophy is clear: minimum intervention, maximum expression of the terroir. At Clos Windsbuhl, the grapes ripen slowly, with a natural aromatic richness and firm acidity, a rare trait for this variety.
Winemaking
At Zind Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl, the grapes are harvested late in order to achieve full physiological ripeness. The pressing is long and delicate, without prior filtration, allowing the must to retain its natural yeasts and proteins. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously, softening textures without detracting from freshness. Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl is aged for 18 months on its lees in neutral French oak barrels over 40 years old, where it gains depth without being altered by wood.
Flavour
Far from the usual exuberant profile, Zind-Humbrecht Gewürztraminer Clos Windsbuhl shows a mineral elegance. On the nose, it opens slowly with notes of ripe litchi, candied orange, dried petals and sweet spices such as clove and cardamom, all on a chalky, almost saline base. On the palate, it combines subtle unctuousness with precise acidity. The tropical fruit is balanced by citrus touches and a long finish, dry in sensation, with echoes of black tea, grapefruit peel and hot stone. It is a wine for those who seek depth, not exuberance; for those who understand that true richness can be quiet.
