Description

On the reddish soils of the Rotenberg, a west-facing slope in Wintzenheim (Alsace), Zind-Humbrecht cultivates Auxerrois with the devotion of someone who understands that wine is a way of reading the soil. This vineyard, planted in 1992 and partly with vines from the 1950s, sits on ferruginous limestone, a subsoil that gives the wine a singular expression: austere, spicy, mineral. Instead of looking for a complacent version of the variety, Zind Humbrecht opts for the truth of the place, even if that means tension and verticality. Here, the Auxerrois of Alsace is not soft and fruity, but firm, serious and deeply marked by its origin.

Winemaking

Zind Humbrecht Auxerrois Rotenberg is vinified with minimal intervention: gentle pressing, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in a 1,750-litre foudre and ageing on fine lees. No sulphur is added during fermentation, no corrections or fining. The wine is bottled with a light filtration and retains all the expression of the terroir. Completely dry and with a remarkable acidity for the variety, this wine defies the expectations of the Alsace white wine.

Taste

The first contact with Zind-Humbrecht Auxerrois Rotenberg is aromatically intriguing: ripe apricots, quince, fennel seeds, cumin and a subtle iodised, almost marine echo. On the palate, the texture is taut, ample but not fat, guided by lively acidity and a firm structure. There is a slight reductive tone at the start, which opens up with air, revealing layers of dried fruit, warm stone and spice. The finish is long, dry, with a lingering salinity that cleanses the palate. A wine that shies away from the obvious, ideal for those seeking mineral white wines with soul, edge and a deep connection to their terroir.
