Description
In the high hills of Hunawihr, where the Rhine wind slowly cools the vineyards of Clos Windsbuhl, one of Zind Humbrecht's most personal wines is born. Founded in 1959, the winery today represents the culmination of centuries of family tradition, guided by the precise vision of Olivier Humbrecht, a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture in Alsace. In a deliberate act of freedom, this wine is made outside the AOC Alsace: a gesture of independence that honours terroir over regulation.
Zind Humbrecht Zind is an unorthodox blend for the region, composed of Chardonnay and Auxerrois planted in the emblematic Clos Windsbuhl, a walled vineyard of exceptional Altura and chalky soils with gypsum veins. The cool conditions and stony soils delay ripening, generating wines with high natural acidity and remarkable cellaring capacity. This microclimate gives the wine a mineral, almost saline signature.
Winemaking
The vinification of Zind Humbrecht Zind is carried out with minimal intervention: long pressing, no aggressive fining, fermentation with indigenous yeasts and spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 12 months in large French oak vats over 40 years old, resting on its lees without stirring, allowing for an ageing process that adds depth without masking the wine's energy.
Taste
From the glass, Zind Humbrecht Zind displays a subtle, sophisticated profile: dried flowers, green apple, a touch of raw almond and wet stone. There is a slight smoky, almost chalky echo. On the palate, the wine is creamy in texture but agile, marked by a precise acidity that structures and lengthens. Notes of winter pear, wild herbs and a trace of toasted yeast melt into a dry, elegant finish. It is not a wine of exuberance, but of restraint and pure expression of the soil.
Ideal for pairing with poultry, creamy pastas or aged cheeses, Zind Humbrecht Zind is an uncompromising white, made for those who seek precision, character and minerality without artifice.
