Description
In the alluvial plains of Turckheim, Olivier Humbrecht - the absolute leader of Alsatian wine and France's first Master of Wine - saw potential where others saw only stony soil. Thus was born Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulée, made from vines planted in the gravel, silt and sand deposits left by the old Fecht River. Despite being on flat terrain, this vineyard enjoys an extraordinary microclimate: high afternoon sun exposure, constant wind and soils that drain and warm up quickly, allowing for homogeneous and early ripening. The biodynamic philosophy of the Zind Humbrecht family guides every decision, without artifice or intervention, allowing the Alsatian terroir to express itself honestly.
Winemaking
The fermentation of Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulée is slow and lengthy, taking place over more than a year in large neutral oak barrels. No added yeasts or oenological corrections are used. The wine rests on its fine lees, acquiring texture, complexity and depth. The result is a dry and expressive Riesling, defined by a balance between natural ripeness and mineral precision.
Taste
Zind Humbrecht Riesling Roche Roulée is taut, mineral and elegant. On the nose, notes of lime peel, green apple, white flower and a subtle hint of warm pebbles after rain. On the palate, the acidity is direct but refined, with a crisp, refreshing profile. Flavours of grapefruit, vibrant salinity, crisp pear and a smoky echo make up an austere, pure profile deeply linked to the soil. The finish is dry, long and almost chalky, leaving a lingering sense of freshness. Ideal with Asian cuisine, oily fish or spicy dishes, this Riesling proves that greatness can also spring from the humblest soils, if worked with conviction and respect.
