Description
Sometimes great wines are born of chance. This was the case in 2009, when Olivier Humbrecht - a leading figure in biodynamic viticulture in Alsace -found himself with a surplus of Clos Häuserer and Heimbourg grapes after a generous harvest. Instead of discarding these "noble leftovers", he decided to ferment them together. The result was so surprising that he bottled them separately, giving birth to Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Calcaire : a wine which, since then, has been made only in selected years and which pays homage to the deep character of the limestone soils of Alsace.
100% Riesling, this wine is born from vineyards on limestone and silt, cultivated with certified biodynamic practices, where the roots sink their being in a cold, austere and mineral soil. Zind Humbrecht' s philosophy is not to tame the Alsatian terroir, but to let it speak with clarity and tension.
Winemaking
The vinification of Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Calcaire is traditional, with slow fermentation using indigenous yeasts and long ageing on fine lees - up to 18 months - in neutral tanks. No new wood is used, and the wine is bottled with minimal intervention, preserving its structural strength and dry character.
Taste
Zind Humbrecht Riesling Calcaire is a wine for Riesling purists. Aromas of lemon, lime, wet stone and white flowers intertwine with an incisive, almost electric acidity. The palate is straight, saline, with a chalky texture and a long finish, where austerity becomes a virtue. The profile is dry, mineral and serious : a wine that prefers to suggest rather than seduce, ideal for seafood, oysters or oily fish. Each sip is a mirror of the soil in which it was born: hard, precise and full of character.
