Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2022 Chardonnay Durell Vineyard is delicate and tinkly. At this early stage, it sits low in the glass, focused on flint, iodine and candle smoke rather than its youthful lemon, pear and citrus blossom aromas. The light-bodied palate balances a gently creamy texture with bright, mouthwatering acidity. It features pure, saline-tinged flavors and has a long, perfumed finish.

Features

Description

Kistler was born from an almost insolent idea for California in the 1970s: to show that there could also be Chardonnays with a real sense of place, as serious as the great whites of the Old World. Kistler has always pursued an uncompromising style: patience, precision and an obsession with detail that shows in every vintage. In Kistler Durrell Vineyard, bottled by the winery since 1986, that philosophy finds a particularly eloquent setting: the vineyard sits at the southern end of Sonoma Valley, where cool influences from the Sonoma Coast and Carneros converge, refining the fruit and tightening the nerve. The soil - a marine marl crossed by a stony vein - provides that mineral pulse and a saline sensation in the background. There are no blends here: it is 100% Chardonnay, but more than a variety, it is Durrell speaking with an oceanic accent.

Winemaking

The grapes enter the winery looking for clarity, not make-up, and in Kistler Durell Vineyard Chardonnay everything is organised around that purity. Fermentation is supported by indigenous yeasts and takes place in the environment of its underground Cava barrels, where time works in favour of texture. Ageing is in French oak barrels, with a contained use of French oak (e.g. 38% new barrels in the 2020 vintage) to add structure and spice without masking the origin. The aim is density with a pulse: white wine with ageing, yes, but always with tension. In difficult years, production narrows, a sign of a viticulture that prefers to say "no" rather than dilute character.

Taste

In the glass, Kistler Durell Vineyard Chardonnay is not a "strident" Chardonnay. An earthy-mineral, compact, almost wet stone-like profile emerges first. With air, layers of apple, lime peel and a flash of flint open up, while the oak suggests - without overpowering - fine spices and discreet cream. On the palate it has that paradox of the greats: satin and energy at the same time. The entry is ample, but the acidity marks the lane and the wine runs: ripe citrus, orchard fruit, and a minerality that sticks to the palate like rock dust. The finish is long, persistent, saline, with a touch of noble toast: ask for pairing with seafood, grilled fish or a lemon-roasted poultry.
