Kistler Stone Flat Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard has pure, layered scents of peach, elderflower, panna cotta, matchstick and toast. The medium-bodied palate balances creamy fruit and a satiny texture with a taut spine of acidity, and it has a long, understated finish.

Description
At Kistler there has always been a point of Californian faith: in the late 1970s, when it was still almost heresy to speak of terroir-driven vineyard Chardonnay, the winery became obsessed with a simple and demanding idea: to be growers first and let the site speak louder than the winery. Stone Flat Vineyard is one of those parcels that tell a story without raising its voice. Bottled since 2002, it sits on marine loam soils with boulders and a maritime imprint that cools ripening. The brave thing here was to accept that, even when facing its "sister vineyard Durell Vineyard", a detail - a different rootstock - could change the music: Kistler Stone Flat Vineyard is deliberately more vertical, more precise, less voluptuous. And the winery tops off the idea with an almost nocturnal decision: harvesting in the early hours of the morning to preserve freshness. Varietal: 100% Chardonnay, worked so that the character of the terroir outweighs any artifice.
Winemaking
At Kistler Stone Flat Vineyard, the grapes are brought in cold, gently pressed and the must is left to run without shortcuts: barrel fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Full malolactic fermentation is not used to muscle the wine, but to round off the edge without dulling the nerve. Ageing continues on the lees in French oak (with the presence of new barrels) for 11 months to build texture by time, not by make-up. The wine is then refined for a few months in stainless steel tanks and bottled without fining or filtering, preserving its mineral pulse.
Taste
Kistler Stone Flat Vineyard is not a Chardonnay of strident fruit: it opens with flinty, wet rock and restrained perfume. Green apple, crisp pear, flashes of lime and grapefruit, and a whisper of hazelnut and fine bread appear with air. The palate is pure tension : precise acidity that stretches the wine, salty rock saltiness, and a sense of chalk and fresh stone that commands the fruit. Long, steely, silky, insistent finish. A white wine for those who prefer energy and minerality to exuberance.
