Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2022 Chardonnay Trenton Roadhouse is luxurious for its detail and delicacy. Its aromas bloom dramatically from matchstick and toast to wafts of apricot, jasmine and panna cotta. It offers a seamless balance of textural creaminess and taut acidity, and it has a long, perfumed finish.

Description
Trenton Roadhouse is a vineyard that is understood more with soil in the boots than with a map. Kistler bottles it as a crisp, taut reading of California Chardonnay : pure energy, freshness and that serious minerality that the house has been pursuing for decades. The philosophy here is almost obstinate: not to make "pretty" Chardonnay, but one with backbone, where ripeness doesn't weigh down and oak doesn't clog. There is one brave decision that sums it all up: harvesting at night, when the clusters are cold and the acidity is intact; for Kistler, at three o'clock in the morning the grapes are literally something else. This wine is 100% Chardonnay, born in a maritime-influenced enclave where Californian light meets cool breezes: richness without losing nerve, depth without losing focus, and an elegance that comes as much from the climate as from the hand.
Winemaking
The Kistler Trenton Roadhouse Chardonnay grapes enter the winery still chilled; they are worked with precision and minimal intervention to preserve brightness and tension. Fermentation takes place in barrel with indigenous yeasts, in their underground cellar, letting the vineyard speak with its own cadences, without pushing aromas or "making up" fruit. The ageing process lasts around 11 months in French oak, with a measured use of new wood to add texture and depth without imposing toast. It is bottled unclarified and unfiltered, retaining all the substance and that tactile, almost rock-dust sensation that makes the wine more lively with age.
Taste
At first, Kistler Trenton Roadhouse Chardonnay does not "smile": it is serious, electric, with a hint of flint and fine reduction that begs for air. The nose shows citrus peel, crisp orchard fruit (green apple, firm pear) and a saline thread reminiscent of wet stone. Then it opens up in layers: tangerine, hazelnut, a wink of restrained brioche and dried herbs. The palate unfurls broadly, but then taut acidity stretches it out and sharpens it like a rope. The fruit veers towards ripe peach and pear, more flesh than sweetness, and the finish is long, chalky, with fine smoke, mild spices and a saline persistence that cleanses the palate. It's not butter: it's tension, precision and minerality.
