Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2021 Pinot Noir Laguna Ridge Vineyard has broody scents of rhubarb, blueberry, lilac and lavender, plus alluring botanical undertones. The medium-bodied palate balances an intense core of layered, briary fruit with loads of grainy tannins, and vibrant acidity gives a shimmery feel to the long, flavorful finish.

Features

Description

Kistler Laguna Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir is born of a stubborn and brilliant idea that Kistler has been pursuing since 1978: that California can speak of terroir as seriously as the old classics. In the Russian River Valley, where the Pacific mists cool the evenings and lengthen ripening, Kistler found in Laguna Ridge a vineyard capable of expressing two readings of the same place - Chardonnay and Pinot - without losing identity. Here the soil is not a decoration: layers of sandstone, granular sediments and fragments of petrified wood force the vines to go deeper, to limit themselves, to concentrate. The brave decision was to bottle the vineyard under its own name and to sustain a precision style, even when the market demanded easy power. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir, designed to be crisp, mineral and persistent, more for detail than show.

Winemaking

At Kistler Laguna Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir, the grapes go in for purity rather than muscle. Strict care is taken to preserve the profile of the site: destemming, controlled fermentation and measured extraction to capture the fruit and nerve without over-ripening or over-make-up. After fermentation, the wine is carefully separated, avoiding aggressiveness, and aged in oak barrels to add texture and complexity without masking the voice of the vineyard. The oak ageing, around ten months, rounds off the wine with fine spice and a silky pulse. Bottling is approached with minimal intervention to maintain freshness and aromatic definition.

Taste

In the glass, Kistler Laguna Ridge Vineyard Pinot Noir starts with raspberry and black cherry, and soon a more serious register emerges: damp earth, cool minerality, a hint of violet. With air, the profile sharpens towards blood orange and a note of sage that tidies up the whole. The palate is medium to full but agile, with vibrant acidity that cleanses the palate, ripe, plush tannin and a concentrated fruit centre that never turns sweet. Long, spicy finish, with dark cherry, citrus peel and that fresh earthiness that keeps you coming back for the next sip. Ideal with duck, mushrooms or poultry, and with patience in bottle.
