Description
In the heart of Turckheim, the Humbrecht family works the vineyard as if it were a living organism. Their biodynamic approach is neither pose nor fashion, but a philosophy that connects soil, climate and the soul of the wine. In the steep, west-facing Heimbourg vineyard, the Pinot Gris ripens slowly, bathed in cool valley breezes and an evening light that lengthens its cycle without overcooking it. There, the oligocene limestone soil, full of oolitic pebbles and oxidised iron, imprints character: an austere, almost Austro-Hungarian energy that the wine conveys without ornamentation. Olivier Humbrecht bucked the trend for voluptuous, sweet Pinot Gris, opting for a dry, upright, mineral expression, with more edge than fat.
Winemaking
The vinification of Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg is patient and without shortcuts. The grapes, harvested by hand, ferment with indigenous yeasts at a natural pace. The wine is aged for 12 months in large traditional foudres, on its fine lees, without bâtonnage or corrections. This prolonged ageing gives it depth, structure and a polished texture, but also makes it reserved in its youth. Decanting is almost a necessity to reveal its full character.
Taste
The colour of Zind Humbrecht Pinot Gris Heimbourg is deep golden yellow, reflecting its maturity and density. On the nose, it starts discreetly: white pear, peach, beeswax and a subtle smoky note. Gradually, nuances of citrus rind, dry hay and hot stone open up. The palate is dry, but with a fatty, enveloping centre, supported by a firm, salivating acidity. The contrast between volume and tension defines its style. The finish is long, marked by a chalky minerality and a noble bitterness reminiscent of raw almonds. It is not a wine that seeks quick applause, but one that conquers in silence, with a serious and profound elegance. Ideal for those who understand that true beauty often whispers.
