Description
Von Winning Forster Pechstein Riesling GG is born in Forst, in the warm heart of the Pfalz, where a hillside seems to have been etched by ancient lava. Pechstein is its name and also its warning: here, the Riesling is not ‘perfumed’, it is chiselled. The Von Winning winery fell in love with that dark energy—volcanic basalt from an ancient crater, deep black veins, volcanic stones incorporated into the vineyard since the 19th century—and made a bold decision: not to tame that force, but to translate it. The idea behind this GG (Grosses Gewächs) stems from an almost artisanal obsession with the place: harvesting with patience, accepting modest yields and pursuing a dry, intense and uncompromising expression. A wine of a single variety, Riesling, and a single philosophy: let the terroir speak, even when it speaks softly, with smoke, flint and salt.
Production
In Von Winning Forster Pechstein Riesling GG, the grapes are selected with precision: strict selection to preserve tension and purity. Fermentation takes place spontaneously and the wine is aged inwoodencasksto develop texture without obscuring its origin. Then comes what defines its structure: an extremely long ageing on lees (nearly two years), which compacts the wine, deepens it and gives it that creamy texture that coexists with a sharp backbone. Bottling aims to preserve the energy: minimal intervention and time for the minerality to settle and the wine to evolve calmly.
Flavour
In Von Winning Forster Pechstein Riesling GG, the first impression is mysterious: flint and a smoky whisper rising from ‘below’, as if the soil were breathing. Then the fruit emerges, restrained and precise: citrus zest, ripe lemon, a hint of mandarin and, in the background, aromatic herbs and yellow apricot. On the palate, it is concentrated and precise: it enters full-bodied, then tightens into a salty, taut line, and the acidity —crisp, surgical—cleanses the palate like a blade of steel. The minerality is tactile, with bite, and the finish, extremely long, leaves an echo of cool smoke, citrus and salt, begging for another sip. A German Riesling for ageing that does not seek to please everyone: it seeks depth.
