Description

In Forst, just behind the church and sheltered by its walls, Kirchenstück is not a vineyard: it is a small sacred amphitheatre where the Pfalz reveals its finest side. Von Winning — a historic estate founded in 1849 — was revived with an almost obstinate idea: that a great dry German Riesling could speak with a Burgundian accent without losing its edge. Under the leadership of Stephan Attmann, the winery boldly opted for spontaneous fermentation in wood and time on the lees, at a time when the ‘modern’ approach was to seek surgical purity in steel.

Here, that decision makes perfect sense: in Von Winning’s Forster Kirchenstück Riesling, basalt, red sandstone (Buntsandstein), limestone and gravel coexist, a blend that shapes the wine as if each layer were polishing a different facet. The variety is 100% Riesling, in the VDP.Großes Gewächs (GG) style: dry, serious and with ageing potential. And if this vineyard were a person, it would be Grace Kelly: quiet elegance, impeccable, without a single superfluous gesture.

Production

The grapes are selected and harvested with precision to preserve the radiant calm of the terroir. In the winery, Von Winning Forster Kirchenstück Riesling GG is vinified with minimal intervention: clean must, spontaneous fermentation and ageing in large barrels to achieve an unadorned texture. The wine spends a long time on the lees to gain density and internal complexity, and is bottled with natural cork, refining its dry profile and mineral tension.

Taste

Von Winning Forster Kirchenstück Riesling GG is not a Riesling with exuberant fruit: it is transparent, layered. First, a cool bouquet of white flowers, citrus zest and white peach; beneath, that note of damp stone and chalk that lends it an aristocratic air without raising its voice. On the palate, a field of tension unfolds: density without weight, pressure without dureza. The acidity is woven into the ripe fruit (yellow apple, apricot) and the salty minerality stretches the finish like a well-tuned string. With exposure to air, smoky and spicy nuances from the ageing emerge, along with a driving herbal freshness and an extremely long finish of candied orange, a hint of liquorice and salt.
