Description
On the remote slopes of Citrusdal Mountain, where ancient vines survive the harsh sun and poor soils, The Sadie Family Kokerboom, one of the most unique jewels of The Sadie Family Wines, was born. Eben Sadie, a key figure in the South African winemaking revolution, discovered this forgotten vineyard like someone finding an ancient manuscript. More than four hours away from his winery, he enters it every year with the same determination, convinced that here lies an essential truth about South Africa's history and potential as a land of great wines.
The vineyard, planted more than 80 years ago on ungrafted vines, is composed of Semillon Blanc and Semillon Rouge (approx. 80/20), varieties that have virtually disappeared from the commercial radar. The very high solar radiation and low rainfall put the plant under stress which results in small, concentrated, thick-skinned grapes. The result is a wine with a powerful texture and an ancient soul.
Winemaking
After the early harvest, the grapes for The Sadie Family Kokerboom are cooled to 4°C and whole cluster pressed for three hours. The must, barely racked, ferments slowly in old vats, a process that can take up to 8 months due to the low nutrition of the juice coming from the vineyard. Malolactic fermentation takes place naturally and the wine remains 12 months on gross lees, without racking. The Sadie Family Kokerboom is bottled unfiltered, with minimal sulphur addition just prior to bottling.
Taste
On the nose, The Sadie Family Kokerboom offers notes of beeswax, lanolin, dried flowers and citrus peel. A subtle minerality runs through the profile, accompanied by hints of camomile and almond. The palate is enveloping and firm, with vibrant acidity and fine tannins that structure the passage. Dry, long, almost saline, its finish is reminiscent of dried thyme and white tea. A meditative white wine, robust and complex, capable of evolving gracefully over the years.
