Description

In the steep heart of the Paardeberg, on a rocky platform with barely 30 to 50 cm of soil, lies the Rotsbank vineyard. A terroir that seems to resist life, but which, against all odds, gives rise to a deeply mineral and sincere Chenin Blanc. Eben Sadie had been searching for a pure expression of Swartland in this variety since 2008, and it was only in 2022, when he acquired this vineyard, that this desire took shape. The roots, searching for nourishment in the crevices of the decomposed granite, yield fruit of enormous concentration and character.

Here, South African Chenin Blanc - locally called Steen - is grown under an extreme climate: dry heat, poor soils, and a marked thermal oscillation that preserves acidity and tension. This environment forges wines of firm structure, with a voice of their own, without compromise.

Winemaking

The grapes for The Sadie Family Rotsbank are harvested by hand and, after picking, carefully cooled to preserve their aromatic compounds in a climate where temperatures often exceed 35 °C. A slow and gentle whole-cluster pressing is carried out, and the must is transferred to two old vats, where it ferments spontaneously. The wine is aged for 12 months on its fermentation lees, without racking or filtration. Only a minimal dose of sulphur is added two weeks before bottling. It is a minimalist process, guided by confidence in the purity of the fruit and the strength of the place.

Taste

The Sadie Family Rotsbank is an austere and precise expression of Swartland Chenin Blanc. The nose offers notes of lemon zest, white pear, dried flowers and a saline trace reminiscent of sun-warmed granite. On the palate, the acidity is firm, almost electric, balanced by a glyceric, taut texture. Notes of green apple, chamomile and a long, dry, saline finish. It does not seek to seduce with exuberant fruit, but with an unwavering mineral purity. It is a wine for those who find beauty in tension and silence, rather than in exuberance.
