Description
On the western slopes of the Paardeberg, where the sun sets brightly on decomposed granite soils, Eben Sadie has conceived a vineyard that not only defies the rules, but also the future. The Sadie Family Sonvang - "sun catcher" in Afrikaans - was born as an experimental and visionary project: a plot co-planted with more than ten Mediterranean and Creole varieties(Alicante Bouschet, Agiorgitiko, Tinta Barroca, Trincadeira, Cinsaut, Cariñena, among others) designed to resist climate change and at the same time capture a sensory complexity impossible to replicate with a single grape. The idea: that the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
Winemaking
The Sadie Family Sonvang is harvested in different vintages, respecting the natural ripeness of each variety. The vinification process reflects the energy of the vineyard: spontaneous fermentation with 30% whole cluster, 70% destemming, and extended maceration for up to 30 days. Pressing is done in an old basket press and ageing is carried out in concrete tanks and old foudres, which do not add any oak flavour, but do allow for a slow evolution. After 11 months on its lees, The Sadie Family Sonvang is bottled unfiltered, with a minimal dose of sulphur dioxide.
Taste
The Sadie Family Sonvang expresses itself with a quiet elegance. On the nose, there is a subtle fragrance of sour cherry, pomegranate, dried orange peel and scrubland spice. The fruit is precise, without excess. The palate is fresh, light on alcohol, but deep in texture. The tannins are almost imperceptible, with firm acidity that structures without attacking. There are notes of black tea, warm earth, sage, and an austere minerality that anchors it to the soil. It is a wine of dry landscape, warm breeze and intense light. An elegant and complex red wine that does not seek to impress, but to insinuate. Its beauty lies in its subtlety.
