Description

In a landscape where the sea meets the dry land and the wind becomes a sculptor of vines, The Sadie Family Skerpioen, one of Eben Sadie' s most unique creations, is born. This plot - located between Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay on the west coast of Swartland - looks more like an act of resistance than a vineyard. Planted with Chenin Blanc and Palomino in the 1960s on chalky soils of extreme pH, with a thin layer of surface sand, this old vineyard withstands every year the inclement scourge of south-easterly winds, which mould low, twisted, almost punishing vines. The result is a South African white wine that is born not to please, but to reveal.

Winemaking

The Sadie Family Skerpioen 's winemaking begins with a hand harvest in the heat of the day, so the grapes are carefully cooled before pressing to preserve their freshness. A slow pressing of whole bunches is used, lasting approximately three hours, allowing the must to settle naturally before being transferred to two ancient oak and acacia foudres. Spontaneous fermentation, with no added yeast, can take several days to start and continue for months, even into the following spring. The Sadie Family Skerpioen remains 12 months on its lees, without racking or fining, and is bottled unfiltered with a minimal dose of sulphur, preserving all its natural expression.

Taste

The Sadie Family Skerpioen is austere, direct and deeply mineral. On the nose, it displays saline notes, oyster shell, limestone and a whisper of dried camomile. The fruit is minimal: just a trace of green quince or citrus zest. On the palate, the texture is taut, marked by lively acidity and a vibrant saltiness that sweeps across the palate like an ocean current. The finish is dry, lingering, with echoes of dried flower, fresh walnut and wet stone. It is a wine for those who seek truth rather than ornamentation. A white of the landscape rather than the cellar, and a liquid testimony to what the vine and the wind can achieve together.
