Description

David Duband has always viewed wine as a faithful reflection of its terroir, rather than an exercise in power. From his winery in Chevannes, in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, his philosophy has been to allow each plot of Burgundy to retain its own voice, texture and rhythm. In 1991, he took the decision – a bold one for a young winegrower – to make his own wines rather than sell his grapes, setting out on a path characterised by precision and respect for the vineyard. Over time, he phased out herbicides, began working the soil and steered the domaine towards organic viticulture. David Duband Chambolle Musigny, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, is sourced from vines around 40 years old growing on clay-limestone soils. In the renowned commune of Chambolle Musigny, the combination of limestone, drainage and exposure lends the wines their unique character: silky-smooth on the palate, with quiet depth and natural elegance.

Production

The grapes for David Duband Chambolle Musigny are harvested by hand and brought to the winery following rigorous selection. Approximately 60 per cent of the bunches are vinified whole, a decision characteristic of David Duband, who seeks to impart energy, complexity and a lighter structure. Maceration lasts around 15 days, with moderate punching down and pumping over to extract flavour without compromising the delicate profile of the Pinot Noir. After pressing, the wine rests for two weeks before being transferred to barrels, where it is aged for 13 months, with 30 per cent in new oak and the remainder in used barrels. It then spends a further three months in vats before being bottled without fining or filtering.

Taste

In the glass, David Duband Chambolle Musigny displays a restrained elegance, without any ostentation. Aromas of raspberry, pomegranate and red cherry emerge, enveloped in violets, delicate petals and a subtle hint of spice. On the palate, it displays a silky, very fine, almost weightless texture, yet held in check by precise acidity and a mineral freshness that courses across the palate. The tannins are subtle, refined, almost chalky. The finish leaves a floral, briny and lingering impression—more of a whisper than a proclamation, yet one of immense depth.
