Description

Champagne Barrat Masson La Jancélie Brut Nature was born from a courageous decision: to stop being "just" winegrowers who sell grapes and become interpreters of their own plots. Loïc Barrat and Aurélie Masson chose the difficult path - less volume, more precision - and turned to a respectful viticulture, seeking to let the vines speak without make-up. The Côte de Sézanne (in the south of Champagne) gives them a particular hallmark: more light, a touch more ripeness, and that mix of chalk and clay that combines chalky edge with discreet fleshiness. Champagne Barrat Masson signs here a version "without a net": a blend of Pinot Noir (65%) and Chardonnay (35%), bone dry, so that the terroir takes over and the wine does not depend on the dosage.

Winemaking

At Barrat Masson La Jancélie Brut Nature, the grapes come in to be treated with a scalpel. The finest part of the pressing is sought, balancing purity and structure. Fermentation is split between inox and barrel (approx. half and half), a duality that adds texture and depth without losing tension. The wine is aged on fine lees prior to tirage, gaining relief and a subtle bakery nuance. It then continues to age in rhyme for 18 months, refining the bubbles and polishing the energy of the whole. Finally, it is disgorged and rests before being released on the market. And the most important thing: real Brut Nature(0 g/L), without sugar to soften edges; here harmony is achieved with vineyard and time.

Taste

In Barrat Masson La Jancélie Brut Nature, the bubbles are fine, more "trace" than showy. The nose is not of flowers or confectionery: it is of lemon and grapefruit rind, crisp apple, and a barely hinted red fruit (fresh strawberry, faint raspberry) that gives away the Pinot Noir without turning it into a rosé champagne. Underneath, the serious layer appears: wet chalk, almond, a light toast, like warm bread without butter. The attack on the palate is straight and dry, with saline acidity that cleanses and stretches; the bubble pushes like an athlete, and the finish leaves an elegant citrus peel-like bitterness that begs for food. Mineral, incisive, persistent: a Champagne for the table, not for selfies.
