Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle is more structured than the Combottes, offering up notes of orange zest, plums and smoky spices, followed by a medium-bodied, taut and chalky palate.

Description
At Domaine Trapet, the vineyard takes centre stage. Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle is not just any plot, but one of those historic Gevrey Chambertin vineyards that the family has linked for generations to a memory that goes back to the very beginnings of the estate. That patient and unpretentious loyalty to the terroir completely defines the wine’s character. Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, it is born in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, on clay-limestone and stony soils, in a continental climate that demands precision and a cool head. Petite Chapelle’s proximity to certain Grand Crus not only enhances its prestige but also explains its profile: a wine of finesse, depth and tension, far more serious than its classification might suggest to those unfamiliar with Gevrey.
Production
Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle is produced according to a philosophy of maximum fidelity to the vineyard, prioritising energy over volume. The harvest is brought into the winery for precise vinification, designed to preserve the natural character of the Pinot Noir. The partial use of whole bunches lends verticality, spice and a more airy character, without disrupting the harmony of the fruit. Fermentation is geared towards measured extraction, focusing more on sculpting texture than on building up power. It is then aged in French oak barrels, where it gains depth, structure and nuance without being overpowered by the wood. Everything serves the purity of the terroir and a remarkable ageing potential.
Taste
In the glass, Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle does not make a loud statement, but rather exudes a quiet elegance. Notes of red and black cherry, raspberry, peony and orange peel emerge , underpinned by hints of damp gravel and delicate undergrowth. There is a very distinct, austere and noble mineral note, which lends the wine a sense of gravitas. On the palate, it is silky at first, but soon tightens with lively acidity and precise structure. The tannins are fine and powdery… The fruit is interwoven with stone, sap and subtle spice. The finish is long, fresh, briny and refined, with a beautiful blend of finesse and power.
