Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2023 Marsannay bursts with notes of orange zest, sweet raspberries and vine smoke, followed by a medium-bodied, supple and fleshy palate. This will drink well young.

Description

Domaine Trapet recognised the potential of Marsannay before many people began to take this historic village in the Côte de Nuits seriously again. The family acquired their first plot here in 1979, with the aim of restoring the prominence of a terroir that had for too long been associated solely with simple reds or light rosés. Trapet Marsannay is a blend from plots such as Grasses Têtes and Grand Poirier, where some vines are over fifty years old, and embodies that deeply Burgundian philosophy of combining nuances without losing identity. Even more decisive was Jean-Louis Trapet’s commitment to biodynamics in 1995, specifically in the Marsannay vineyards that were in a weakened state. The change was so striking that many mistook it for a miracle fertiliser. Since then, the estate has been cultivated without herbicides, through careful soil management, attentive observation of the vineyard and absolute trust in the land’s ability to speak for itself. Here, everything revolves around Pinot Noir, shaped by a continental climate and the diverse soils of Marsannay, which lend the wine vigour, finesse and depth.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for Trapet Marsannay follows this same philosophy of precision without artifice. In the cellar, Trapet has been working with whole bunches for years, further refining the method by removing the central stem to preserve energy and freshness without introducing harsh vegetal notes. Fermentation takes place naturally, with gentle extractions and a constant focus on purity rather than power. The wine is aged in barrels, where it gains texture, structure and depth without losing the tension that defines the terroir, before being bottled with as little intervention as possible.

Flavour

In the glass, Trapet Marsannay does not seek to impress through exuberance, but through authenticity. The nose opens with red cherry, fresh berries, orange peel, dried petals and a hint of damp undergrowth. The fruit never overpowers; it is held in check by an earthy, floral and spicy framework. On the palate, it is juicy, velvety and lively, but quickly takes on a taut quality with subtle pepper, sap, mineral freshness and a long, salty and very clean finish. A Burgundy Pinot Noir with vigour, finesse and authenticity.
