Description

Domaine Trapet views itsBourgogne Chardonnay not as a minor white wine, but as a genuine expression of its terroir. At this historic estate in the Côte de Nuits, this wine stems from a deeply Burgundian philosophy: to produce a sincere white wine, everyday in appearance only, yet full of authenticity and a sense of place. Trapet Bourgogne Chardonnay is made from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from two plots in Marsannay, En Auvonne and En Varangée, which enjoy good exposure and silty, clay-limestone soils covered with small stones. This cool, precise and understated setting in northern Burgundy imbues the wine with a very clear identity: less exuberance than tension, less artifice than transparency. Trapet also practises biodynamic viticulture, with an artisanal and respectful approach that allows even this regional appellation cuvée to exude the essence of the landscape, energy and authenticity.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for Trapet Bourgogne Chardonnay is guided by restraint, purity and attention to detail. The grapes arrive from these limestone-rich plots with the aim of preserving all their natural character. Ageing takes place in a combination of large Stockinger casks, concrete ‘eggs’ and oak barrels – a choice that perfectly reflects the domaine’s philosophy. Here, the aim is not for the wood to take centre stage, but rather for the ageing process to impart texture, depth and gradual aeration without obscuring the wine’s origins. The wine thus gains depth and precision, without any artificial embellishments, maintaining a very delicate balance between body, freshness and mineral expression.

Taste

In the glass, Trapet Bourgogne Chardonnay appears serene and refined. The nose opens gradually, initially revealing notes of damp stone, chalk, a faint hint of flint and a very distinct impression of freshness. This is followed by nuances of crisp pear, white peach, delicate apricot, citrus zest and green almond, with a barely perceptible hint of very subtle brioche in the background. On the palate, it is direct, lively and taut, with an acidity that sets the tone from the very first moment. It does not seek a rich, unctuous body, though it does possess a subtle fruitiness that rounds out the mid-palate. The most beautiful aspect is the contrast between serene fruit and a chalky structure. The finish is briny, citrusy and stony—clean, elegant and tremendously drinkable.
