Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Champ Gain displays aromas of fresh peach, white currants, spring flowers and fresh pastry, followed by a medium to full-bodied, textural but racy palate that's lively and mineral. It's the second vintage Anne Morey has produced from this recently acquired parcel.

Features

Description

At the top of Mont Rachet, where the forests timidly open up to cultivation, Pierre Morey cultivates a tiny plot of 0.17 hectares in the Champ Gain climat, one of the highest premiers crus in Puligny Montrachet. Its name - perhaps alluding to a land reclaimed from the mountain - already hints at its uniqueness. The soil is shallow, stony and of clay-limestone composition, with a south-eastern exposure which, far from accelerating ripening, imposes a slow and precise rhythm. This slowness, in the hands of Pierre Morey - an absolute reference in Burgundy biodynamic viticulture - is transformed into purity and mineral tension.

Winemaking

Since 2017, the Chardonnay that gives life to the Pierre Morey Puligny Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru has been vinified with a minimal and intuitive philosophy: gentle pneumatic pressing, followed by natural decanting for 12 to 24 hours. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (20-50% new), with ageing on fine lees for 16 to 20 months. Bottling is carried out by gravity, without fining or systematic filtering, respecting the identity of the site as much as possible.

Taste

Pierre Morey Puligny Montrachet Champ Gain 1er Cru is pale, with greenish reflections, and an initially discreet nose, with a reductive touch that gives way to notes of citrus fruits, white fruits and a herbal whisper. On the palate, its precise volume and silky texture are surprising, supported by a vibrant minerality and well-delineated acidity. Nothing is exuberant: all is balance, subtlety and energy. On the finish, nuances of lemon, white flower and wet stone unfold, with elegant persistence and a salinity that invites the next sip. This is a Altura Puligny Montrachet -literally and figuratively-, combining structure, freshness and precision, ideal for those seeking the purest essence of Burgundian Chardonnay.
