Description
In 2003, Pierre Morey - an undisputed Burgundy reference and former technical director of Domaine Leflaive - acquired a little gem: 0.35 ha in the climat Les Pétures, a plot located in Meursault but classified as Volnay 1er Cru Santenots. A unique terroir, with red, shallow and very stony soils, which forces the Pinot Noir vines to constantly struggle to survive, producing highly concentrated clusters. Since 2004, this vineyard has been worked under certified biodynamic principles, a reflection of Morey's commitment to a lively and sensitive viticulture.
Winemaking
The vinification of Pierre Morey Volnay Volnay 1er Cru is precise and respectful: the grapes, completely destemmed and barely crushed, ferment with indigenous yeasts in open wooden vats. Extraction is gentle, favouring elegance over strength. The wine is aged for 15 to 20 months in French oak barrels, with between 30% and 70% new wood, depending on the vintage. It is bottled by gravity, without fining or filtering, preserving its natural purity.
Taste
Pierre Morey Volnay Santenots Volnay 1er Cru expresses itself with a refined and nuanced profile. The nose displays black cherry, wild raspberry, dried violets and a delicate earthy background, with echoes of cured meat and orange peel. On the palate, the texture is silky but structured, with firm tannins and a vibrant acidity that adds tension and lengthens the finish. There is a latent, almost saline minerality that evokes the stony soils of its origin. This is not an exuberant Pinot Noir, but an introspective one, the kind that opens slowly in the glass and reveals its soul over time. Ideal for those seeking elegance without artifice and an honest expression of the Volnay terroir.
