Description
In Beaune, the discreet capital of the Côte de Beaune in Burgundy, there are hillsides that don't need to raise their voice to command respect. Grèves is one of them: a Beaune Premier Cru on a half-slope, with that gravelly soil that crunches under the boot and forces the vines to dig deep, to suffer a little to gain precision. Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Grèves is born of a philosophy as simple as it is demanding: let the place speak before technique. The Drouhin family, linked to Beaune since 1880, made bold choices when they were not yet trendy: organic viticulture from the end of the 1980s and a decisive move towards biodynamics in the 1990s, seeking natural balance in the vineyard rather than quick fixes in the cellar. Here, the landscape Mandó rules: exposure, slope and stone that give character. The result is a French Pinot Noir red wine that unites pulse and elegance: Burgundy with fine structure, not make-up.
Winemaking
At Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Grèves, the grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected so that they arrive intact. Vinification is adapted to the vintage and can include between 20% and 50% whole bunch, providing aromatic nerve and a more vertical tension. Fermentation and maceration take approximately 2-3 weeks in open vats, alternating punching down and pumping over to extract without Dureza. Pressing is carried out in a vertical press, separating fractions according to tasting. Ageing lasts 14-18 months in oak barrels, with 25% new wood: enough to frame the wine without obscuring the vineyard.
Taste
On the nose, Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Grèves presents itself with restrained, precise red fruit: redcurrant, fresh cherry and very fine spice reminiscent of the mineral crunch of the soil. With air, deeper, slightly smoky nuances and a subtle hint of tobacco appear. The palate is pure balance: juicy entry, polished tannin, silky but firm texture. The fruit shows measured ripeness and a sense of pulp (well-defined red and black berries), but the finish refines and lengthens, leaving an elegant impression somewhere between crème de cassis and warm stone. A Burgundy wine that convinces by its persistence: fleshy without being heavy, complex without being baroque.
