Description
J.J. Confuron Côte de Nuits Villages Les Vignottes hails from Prémeaux-Prissey, in the south of the Côte de Nuits, and perfectly encapsulates the ethos of a Burgundian estate that has always favoured precision over fanfare. In the late 1980s, Sophie Meunier-Confuron and Alain Meunier reoriented the domaine with a rare conviction: to work with greater respect for the soil, reduce yields and seek a purer expression of the vineyard. It was a courageous, quiet decision – far from theatrical – yet crucial to understanding the character of their wines. Here, Pinot Noir takes centre stage, on its own, unadorned, on the appellation’s limestone and marl soils, in a continental climate that favours slow ripening, fine acidity and a restrained depth, very much in the style of the Côte de Nuits.
Winemaking
The winemaking process for J.J. Confuron Côte de Nuits Villages Les Vignottes follows a classic approach, but one that is very measured. The grapes are harvested by hand, with careful selection to retain only healthy, balanced fruit. In the cellar, extraction is carried out delicately so as not to toughen the wine’s profile. Fermentation aims to respect the character of the fruit and the terroir, after which J.J. Confuron Côte de Nuits Villages Les Vignottes is transferred to French oak barrels, where it is aged for around 15 to 18 months. The oak is not intended to dominate, but rather to give the wine structure, refine its texture and add depth without obscuring the vineyard’s mineral and earthy character.
Flavour
J.J. Confuron Côte de Nuits Villages Les Vignottes does not seduce through exuberance, but through restraint and authenticity. On the nose, it opens with fresh cherry, raspberry and a subtle hint of crisp strawberry, but more serious notes soon emerge: undergrowth, damp earth, dry leaves, a hint of muted violet and a delicate, very Burgundian spice. On the palate, it has an apparent lightness, yet plenty of substance. The acidity gives it a lively edge; the tannins are silky and polished; and the wine glides across the palate with serene elegance, leaving behind fresh red fruit, a very subtle earthy nuance and a clean, persistent, mineral finish. It does not seek volume; it seeks style. And it finds it.
