Description

J.J. Confuron sees wine as a faithful reflection of the vineyard. From Premeaux-Prissey, the family has forged an identity based on patience, organic cultivation and minimal intervention, always guided by the belief that the land should speak louder than the hand of man. At Les Chaboeufs, this philosophy finds its perfect expression. This Nuits Saint Georges Premier Cru, made exclusively from Pinot Noir, comes from a plot characterised by stony, clay-limestone soils and a distinct mineral character. The location, at the entrance to the Combe des Vallerots, lends freshness and tension to a wine that does not seek immediate opulence, but rather depth, precision and a restrained character, very much in keeping with Burgundy.

Winemaking

The grapes are harvested by hand, with a rigorous selection process to ensure only the healthiest fruit is retained. In the cellar, the winemaking process for J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs follows a classic, non-interventionist approach, with natural fermentation and measured extraction, designed to respect the finesse of the Pinot Noir without compromising its structure. The wine is aged for between 15 and 18 months in French oak barrels, with a restrained use of new oak – just enough to support the wine without overshadowing its origins. After this period, the wine is bottled with as little handling as possible, preserving all its energy and character.

Taste

On the nose, J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs is reserved at first, very much in keeping with its style, but as it opens up, it reveals a serene and complex depth. Aromas of black cherry, plum and ripe raspberry emerge, enveloped in hints of wilted violets, liquorice, undergrowth and a touch of graphite. It is neither an exuberant nor an overly fruity wine; its expression is more earthy, floral and mineral, with an austere nobility that gives it great character.

On the palate, it enters delicately, almost stealthily, and immediately reveals its true character: firm acidity that gives it length, a silky texture with fine-grained tannins, and a compact, serious, very well-integrated structure. Red and dark fruit blends with notes of damp earth, subtle spices and a faint truffle-like undertone. Persistent, fresh and full of tension, this is a classic-style Burgundy Pinot Noir—deeper than it is approachable—which opens up with exposure to air and leaves a long, elegant and distinctly mineral finish.
