Description

At Jean-Jacques Confuron, in Premeaux-Prissey, the wine is born of an almost stubborn loyalty to the terroir. Sophie Meunier-Confuron and Alain Meunier steered the domaine towards organic and biodynamic viticulture at a time when it was still a bold decision, rather than a commercial convenience. This move perfectly encapsulates the house’s ethos: patience, risk-taking and absolute trust in the vineyard. J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs comes from a climat situated on clay-limestone soils, at the heart of an appellation where Pinot Noir finds one of its most serious expressions. The continental climate, the limestone and the austere tradition of Nuits Saint Georges shape a wine that is less seductive than profound, more earthy than exuberant, always underpinned by a restrained energy and a strong sense of terroir.

Winemaking

The winemaking process for J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs follows a classic Burgundian approach: precise and unadorned. The grapes are harvested by hand, sorted and destemmed before undergoing cold pre-fermentation maceration for several days to develop colour, aroma and texture. Fermentation takes place under temperature control with regular pigeage, aiming to extract density without losing finesse. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels, with a notable proportion of new oak, where it matures slowly before bottling. Intervention is minimal, with low sulphur levels and no filtration, to preserve the wine’s substance, tension and the character of the vineyard.

Taste

J.J. Confuron Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Chaboeufs does not burst onto the scene with a flourish, but rather with a reserve that already hints at its character. The nose suggests black cherry, plum, dried flowers, liquorice, graphite and an earthy undertone reminiscent of damp stone and a shady woodland. There is no cloying fruit or obvious fragrance, but rather restraint, depth and minerality. On the palate, it enters silkily, but its structure soon emerges: fine, firm tannins, well-balanced acidity and a texture that combines strength and elegance. Ripe red and black fruit blends with withered floral notes, dark spices and a still-young ageing profile that adds depth without overpowering. The finish is long, serious and slightly austere, very much in the style of Nuits Saint Georges: a Pinot Noir of gravitas, more about resonance than impact, more about authenticity than indulgence.
